Both Quartz and Porcelain are man-made materials. The key difference between them is that Porcelain uses a stone bases onto which a picture is printed, whilst Quartz is a made from a combination of natural stone, resin and pigments, which go through a heat treated and compactly sealed to form a solid stone.
Due to how Porcelain is formed, it can offer much more visually attractive designs versus Quartz, this is more apparent if the manufacturer achieves a premium finish to Porcelain. With that said, this also means that Quartz is not only beautiful to look at, it is a much sturdier stone than Porcelain.
As kitchen worktops go, important features such as strength and durability should be considered carefully. Think about it, over the years, your kitchen worktop will be susceptible to all sorts of heat from pots and pans, prone to a variety of food being placed and prepared on it, likely to receive all sorts of knocking and bashing by utensils, pots and pans. Therefore, selecting a Quartz worktop has become a very popular choice with many of our customers rather than a Porcelain worktop.
Another advantage of a Quartz worktop versus a Porcelain worktop is the design of Quartz continues around to the edges too. Picture Quartz being made similar to that of baking a cake, where all the ingredients are put into a template and then baked. So, should the unfortunate happen, where something hard hits the worktop at great strength and the Quartz slab is chipped, it will remain the same colour where the chip is.
With Porcelain being essentially a printing on top of a stone slab, the design does run through the thickness of the stone, the print is just a thin layer. If a Porcelain worktop was to encounter a chip, which we know is more likely to happen over Quartz, then the colour of the actual stone underneath the chipped area will of course be a different colour and stand out to the naked eye.
