You’ve made the choice to go for a granite worktop, your next decision would be to decide on a colour. Choosing the colour of your new granite worktop is not a decision that should be made lightly. Once your granite worktop has been installed, it is very difficult and expensive to change it. A lot of time will be spent in your kitchen and any colour choice will be one you are likely going to live with for a long time, so getting it right first time is very important.
How To Choose A Granite Worktop Colour
How To Choose A Granite Worktop Colour
Kitchen Lighting and Space
In a darker kitchen where there is very little natural light coming in, it is recommended to opt for light or pale granite worktop. Installing light or pale kitchen units would also help for a seamless effect, creating the illusion of more overall space.
Choosing a dark colour for a small kitchen can make it feel smaller than it actually is, however, on the other hand, dark colour granite worktops work superbly well in a larger kitchen space, especially if there is a lot more natural or even artificial lighting. For those with a smaller kitchen or one that does not have good lighting, opting for colours such as whites, creams and yellows work best in our experience. Those with an abundance of space and a lot of light, there is more choice of colour options available.
The ”Long-Term” Factor
A typical question we ask our clients is “how long are your planning to stay in this house for”. Although a bright coloured granite worktop might be stunning and your own personal taste, it may not be a choice of any potential future buyers. If you do have thoughts of selling your home in the next few years, sticking with a neutral tone could increase your chances of selling. You can still have a bright kitchen to suit your taste by opting for bright-coloured accessories or brighter kitchen walls. That way, when it is time to sell your home, walls can be easily re-painted to a neutral colour and accessories can come with you. Keep in mind that your own personal preferences may change over time too.
Traditional VS Contemporary
There is nothing to say that you cannot mix and match styles – just because you have a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen, doesn’t mean you cannot have a modern granite worktop colour. Equally, in a more modern style of kitchen with handle-less cupboards, that you cannot have a marble-effect granite worktop.
Ideally, we would recommend matching your existing style of kitchen to create a more complete look which extends through your kitchen and is not restricted to just the worktop. You want your granite worktop to stand out for a good reason as it is generally the focal point of any kitchen.
Remember, when making your decision, keep in mind the colours of the rest of your kitchen – the cabinets, the walls, the tiles and even the floor.

After being let down by another company last minute, the team at Sharpstone sourced the stone we wanted despite major supply issues, templated and fitted in fast. The quality and attention to detail is incredible and the overall experience was immaculate.
